#IOAD2024: International Overdose Awareness Day
The Mercer Council team invites you to join us on Thursday, August 29th at Veterans Park in Hamilton, NJ for an evening of reflection and community support, at Mercer Council’s 9th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) event.
Globally observed in late August, IOAD seeks to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of substance use disorder and addiction. For nearly a decade, Mercer Council has brought our community together to honor those we’ve lost to overdose. We support those in recovery and fight against the stigma surrounding drug use. This year’s gathering will be a powerful and meaningful experience for all.
Keynote Speech: Dr. Kaitlan Baston
We are excited to welcome back Dr. Kaitlan Baston, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health, who will provide a keynote address. Last year, Dr. Baston delivered a deeply moving speech that resonated with many. Her passion for addiction treatment and commitment to healthcare equity makes her the perfect leader for this year’s reflection. Dr. Baston’s message is one of hope and determination – reminding us that, “together, we will demand a kinder, safer, more equitable New jersey for people with addiction.”
Honoring Angelo Onofri: A Prevention Trailblazer
This year, we will also honor Angelo Onofri, recently retired Mercer County Prosecutor. Angelo has supported our IOAD event since its early days, even when talking about overdose was contentious and “taboo.” His dedication to the event has made a lasting impact. We are proud to recognize him with the “Prevention Trailblazer” award. His courage to stand with us has helped make this event what it is today.
A Night of Remembrance and Support
The evening will feature moments to remind us why this work matters. We will have a memorial display to commemorate loved ones, and a candlelight vigil to honor those lost to overdose. This will create space for grief, support and healing. It’s also a time to connect, find support, and share resources as a community. Whether you are in recovery, have lost someone, or want to show your support – we hope you will join us for this deeply impactful event.
