New Drunk Driving Law in place for Convicted First Time Offenders

IIL

A new drunk driving law is in effect that will require convicted first time offenders with a legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 to install ignition interlock devices as a means to stop them from driving while intoxicated. The new law also applies to individuals who refuse to provide a breath test after they are pulled over. Individuals convicted of drunk driving will be required to blow into a device installed in their vehicle prior to their vehicle being turned on. Previous law has required ignition locks for repeat offenders and those who had a BAC of .15 or higher. (information contained in this paragraph provided by NJ 101.5 article). Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) president Helen Witty regards this law as "the most significant DWI reform in NJ in nearly a decade" (quote provided by NJ 101.5 article). MADD has been a leading nation wide crusader in the efforts to eliminate drunk driving, combat drugged driving, and prevent underage drinking. They developed a curriculum called Protecting You, Protecting Me (PYPM) which is an alcohol use prevention program for children in grades K-5. PYPM gives students essential knowledge and skills that increase their non-use attitudes and decisions regarding underage alcohol use, increase their intentions not to ride with an impaired driver, and improves their ability to protect themselves when they have no option but to ride with a driver who is not alcohol-free.

Mercer Council takes great pride in delivering this beneficial DMHAS funded program to children in Mercer County schools. Mercer Council has provided this program at elementary schools within the county for 4 years, primarily in the Hamilton and Trenton school districts. We are looking to expand the program to other towns in Mercer county as well! Please contact PYPM Program Coordinator, Vanessa DeRosa by email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
