Educating the public about the importance of the human brain
Our brain is the boss of our body, in charge of everything we do as human beings, and the most important part of our body. These statements are just a few of the many important messages children learn in the Protecting You, Protecting Me alcohol use prevention program delivered by Mercer Council. Our brain is so important, it has a whole week dedicated to it! Brain Awareness week was introduced in 1996 by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives (DABI) and European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB). The purpose of Brain Awareness Week is to increase public awareness of the benefits of brain research and progress made in the treatment of disorders in the brain such as Alzheimers and Schizophrenia. Events are held worldwide to educate youth and adults on what the brain does, and how to keep it healthy.
Below are websites that contain more information about Brain Awareness Week. Be sure to also check out the Neuroscience for Kids Website, where you will find many brain related articles written specifically for kids, as well as, activities such as online brain games, coloring sheets, opportunity for children to build their own brain model and neuron, and more!
